The first championship round of Pikes Peak International Raceway’s Time Attack series took place almost two weeks ago so here I am to talk about it. That’s me up there in the green Miata running in RB, the slow RWD class. There were 72 drivers in my class and 272 drivers overall. Lots of cars.

Kinja'd!!!

I finished 21st out of 72 in my class, so in the top 30%. Not bad considering I could add another 70-odd horsepower without jumping to the faster RA class. This was my first time pushing my brand new Hankook RS4 tires, so I’m still sort of figuring them out. Here’s video of my fastest run, a 46.941:

Some notable cars I beat, regardless of class, because it’s fun and I only have 110 whp:

2002 Subaru WRX: 47.238

2003 Honda S2000: 47.257

2017 Subaru BRZ: 47.323

2013 Mercedes C63 AMG: 47.340

2006 Porsche Cayman S: 47.583

2015 Ford Fiesta ST: 47.938

2004 Mazdaspeed Miata: 48.196

2001 BMW M3: 48.206

2011 Mazdaspeed3: 48.426

2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat(!!): 48.489 (this guy has made it out to a bunch of events and I’ve beaten him every single time. no shame in my 110 hp game)

2008 Chevrolet Corvette: 48.569

2016 Ford Mustang Roush: 48.601

2005 Dodge Ram SRT-10: 48.738

2017 Mercedes C43 AMG: 49.299

2015 Mercedes AMG GLA 45

In between my runs I took about a thousand photos. Here are the handful that I’ve actually edited:

Was I the only Oppo out at this event? I seem to recall someone else saying they were planning on attending some of them. If any of you do make it out, swing by and say hello! I’ll be the guy with crazy hair and the RB55 green & gold Miata.

The place I’m moving to in June is only about 5 hours south so I’ll have to come up for one of these sometime later in the year.

“Only”

Albuquerque/Santa Fe-ish?

No relevance, just the drive from Albuquerque to Denver is the longest mileage I’ve ever driven without stopping...468 miles without getting gas or using the bathroom. Made it back seven minutes before the kennel closed. I underestimated how much time I’d need at the Unser museum.

Those photos are fantastic! Love the one of your car as well.

It makes me happy to see that SVX.

Santa Fe. It’s not really close to much so anything under 6 hours is going to get an “only” from me. The longest I’ve ever gone without any stop is around 450 from Phoenix to El Paso in IH10 in a rental Altima. I don’t think any of the cars I’ve actually owned could go much more than 400 without a gas stop.

There are definitely people who drive in from all over to attend these events. I can’t say I’ve never driven 5 hours for 5 minutes of seat time, but it’s not something I would want to make a habit of.

Thanks! The SVX was predictably slow, but it looked awesome doing it.

I’m inclined to agree! It’s only two hours away from my house, too.

Yeah, the gas light came on when I hit the outskirts of Denver. It was the company Jetta - I haven’t had a car with a gas tank over 11 gallons since high school!

I like that part of New Mexico except when it’s the middle of the summer. You’ve got a ton of hot springs in a relatively short drive. I usually take 285 from Denver (depending on traffic) which can be...interesting. Some really pretty sections but the whole San Luis Valley in southern Colorado looks like hell on earth.

I wasn’t there, but I did see the guy who built and sold me my Exocet post one of his runs there a few days ago. He had the yellow (post-facelift) NC Miata if you saw it. Super nice guy too.

Yep, I met him when he still had the Exocet. I thought I saw him out at this event in an Exocet t-shirt, but didn’t see what he was driving. I’ll keep an eye out next time!

I’m surprised to see time attack allow for no roll bars for convertibles that lack built-in pop-up hoops for occupant safety in the event of a roll-over. Nice work!

Eh, this time attack series is like Jumbo Autocross. Even with walls fairly close at times (like in the final section of this course below), I’ve never felt unsafe to push 10/10. The closest I’ve seen a vehicle come to rolling over was at this most recent event. The Ram SRT-10 got loose in the final sweeper, slid out, kept the power going, and the rear end started to hop quite a bit as it came to a stop.
